How to keep a conservatory, garden room or home office cool

Highly glazed rooms can be wonderful in mild weather and difficult during a sunny spell. This guide compares the main ways to manage heat and screen glare, including where each option works well and where it falls short.

Why highly glazed rooms overheat

Sunlight passes through the glass and warms floors, furniture and other surfaces. Those surfaces release heat into the room, which can build faster than it escapes. A conservatory roof, large bifold doors or a broad west-facing window gives the sun a large area through which to enter.

Orientation matters. South-facing rooms receive sun for much of the day, while west-facing rooms often become hottest in the late afternoon. Roof glazing can receive strong sun when it is high in the sky. Dark floors and furniture can absorb more energy, and a closed room with limited air movement holds on to the heat.

A garden office has an extra source: computers, monitors and people all add heat. Good insulation can slow heat entering through the walls and roof, but it can also retain heat that has already built up. The best answer is often a combination of reducing solar gain, moving air and removing heat.

Start with ventilation, blinds, shading and fans

Opening windows and improving ventilation

Cross-ventilation is most useful when the air outside is cooler than the room. Open windows or doors on opposite sides, if safe, so warmer air can leave and cooler air can replace it. High-level roof vents are particularly useful because warm air rises.

On very hot afternoons, wide-open windows can admit hotter outdoor air. It can be more effective to ventilate early in the morning and later in the evening, then reduce solar gain and keep the room more closed during the hottest period. Never compromise security, child safety or pet safety to create airflow.

Internal blinds and curtains

Internal blinds and curtains are adjustable, familiar and useful for glare and privacy. Pale, reflective-backed fabrics generally absorb less heat than dark materials. Roof blinds can be especially helpful where overhead sun is the main problem.

Their limitation is that sunlight has already passed through the glass before it reaches the blind. Some of that energy becomes heat between the glass and fabric and then enters the room. Closed blinds also reduce daylight and the view, but their adjustability may be more important in bedrooms or multi-use rooms.

External blinds, awnings and shading

External shading can be very effective because it intercepts direct sun before it reaches the glass. Options include retractable awnings, external blinds, shade sails, roof shades and carefully positioned planting. Adjustable systems allow winter sunlight back in.

External products usually cost more than internal blinds and need secure fixing, weather resistance and maintenance. Wind exposure, planning considerations, drainage and the building structure may limit what is practical.

Fans and portable cooling

A fan does not normally lower the room's air temperature, but moving air helps people feel cooler. A quiet desk or pedestal fan can be a sensible first step in a home office. Ceiling fans can distribute air across a larger room if the roof and clearances are suitable.

Evaporative coolers add moisture and work best in dry, well-ventilated conditions; they are less effective in humid rooms. Portable air conditioners do actively cool, but their exhaust hose must vent outside and poorly sealed window kits can let warm air back in.

Air conditioning

Air conditioning is the option that directly controls temperature. A correctly sized fixed system can make a frequently used conservatory or garden office comfortable during prolonged hot weather and may also provide heating in winter.

It has a higher purchase and running cost, needs maintenance and works harder if strong solar gain is not addressed. Portable units are easier to buy but are often noisier and less efficient. If reliable temperature control is essential—for example because of health needs, equipment or all-day work—air conditioning may be the appropriate solution, sometimes combined with shading or film.

Solar-control window film

Solar-control film is applied to compatible existing glazing to reduce part of the solar energy and glare passing through the treated panes. It can be useful on bifold doors, conservatories, garden rooms and home-office windows where homeowners want to retain more daylight and a view than closed blinds allow.

Selected insulation films can reduce solar heat gain through treated glazing by up to 60%, reduce glare by up to 54%, and help reduce winter heat loss through treated glass by up to 34%. These figures are not a promise of a particular room-temperature reduction or lower energy bills. Film acts only on treated glazing: it does not remove heat from people, equipment, roofs or poorly ventilated spaces.

Window film can help protect floors, furniture and furnishings from sun fading, but it cannot prevent every cause of fading.

Neutral versus reflective films

Neutral films aim for a subtler external appearance and may be preferred where keeping the glass looking natural matters. Reflective films can provide stronger solar performance in some ranges but create a more noticeable mirrored appearance. Their daytime privacy effect depends on the outside being brighter than the inside and may reverse at night, so it should not be treated as dependable night-time privacy.

Every film changes visible light to some degree. A lighter neutral film retains more daylight; a darker or more reflective film will usually give stronger glare control. Viewing a sample against the actual window is far more useful than choosing from a name alone.

Insulation film

Insulation or low-emissivity film is designed to help reduce winter heat loss through treated glass as well as manage solar gain. It does not insulate frames, roofs or walls, and it does not turn older glazing into a new high-performance window unit. It may be worth considering in a room that is uncomfortable in both summer and winter, provided the existing glass is compatible.

Managing glare while retaining daylight

For screen glare, the goal is usually to reduce the contrast between the bright window and the monitor rather than make the room dark. Start by positioning the screen at right angles to the window and adjusting blinds only on the affected panes. A suitable lighter film can provide steady glare reduction while retaining more daylight than a fully closed blind.

Stronger glare reduction normally means less visible light. In a room used after sunset or on grey days, test the balance carefully. Task lighting can help the desk without brightening the whole room.

When window film may not solve the whole problem

Film may have a limited effect if most heat enters through an uninsulated roof, open doors, walls or equipment. A room with no safe ventilation can still hold heat. Roof panels, failed glazing units, draughts or undersized heating and cooling systems need their own remedies.

It may also be the wrong choice when a very clear, unchanged view is essential, when the required film is incompatible with the glass, or when adjustable shading is needed at different times. Combining modest film with blinds, ventilation or cooling can be more balanced than asking one measure to do everything.

Compatibility before performance

Factors that affect film choice

Glass construction

Toughened, laminated, annealed and roof glass behave differently. The installer needs to identify the pane before specifying film.

Double or triple glazing

Some films suit particular sealed units and others do not. Film-to-glass compatibility cannot be assumed from the number of panes alone.

Existing coatings

Low-E, solar-control or self-cleaning coatings may affect the safe film and application side. Glazing documents are helpful when available.

Orientation and shade

South-, west- and roof-facing panes may need different treatment from shaded or north-facing glass.

Pane size

Large panes and partially shaded panes can experience different thermal stresses, so dimensions and surrounding shade matter.

Internal or external application

Access, glass make-up, weather exposure and the selected product determine which side is appropriate.

Desired daylight

A stronger film may help more with glare but make grey days feel darker. Samples should be judged from the main seating or working position.

External appearance

Neutral, tinted and reflective films alter the façade differently. Check adjoining panes so the finished elevation looks intentional.

It is worth exploring when excessive sun enters mainly through otherwise serviceable glazing, you want steady glare reduction, and retaining reasonable daylight or a view matters. It is less likely to be enough on its own when the roof or equipment is the main heat source, exact temperature control is essential, or the glass is unsuitable.

  • Decide how much daylight and view you want to keep.

When to get professional advice

Ask a glazing or window-film professional to assess the glass before film is ordered, especially for large panes, roof glazing, double or triple glazing, Low-E coatings or unknown glass. Ask an air-conditioning specialist if you need predictable temperature control or the room contains heat-sensitive equipment. Structural advice may be needed before mounting heavy awnings or ceiling fans.

A useful assessment should consider the whole room, not just the glass. Be prepared to discuss orientation, the time of day the problem occurs, roof construction, ventilation, screen positions and your tolerance for changes in daylight and appearance.
